Child's Bunny Headboard

For this project students were asked to analyze different home product lines from Target. Through these studies we were able to identify a product need for a specific line. I found that the Target Pillowfort line is is a colorful and playful line of furniture and accessories geared towards children. While Pillowfort has a small line of basic quilted headboards, I found it was lacking a headboard with a storage component.

With that in mind, the product I created for the Target Pillowfort line is a Bunny Headboard. My main goal for this headboard design was to provide an option for children to keep their important possessions, like a favorite book or stuffed animal, just an arm's reach away. It also provides a whimsical storage option as opposed to a basic shelving unit.

Urban Camping Cart

During the Kohl's DesignIT Lab Internship, we were tasked with creating a design to help the homeless community of Milwaukee. For my design, I wanted to create an object that could be easily moved around but that also provided some storage. The cart would come with a single person tent, rainwater filter/storage, solar panel, and a shallow planter at the top. The rainwater storage and filter would help give access to fresh water for free, more often. The pop out solar panel provides energy to a single outlet inside the storage cart for any electrical needs. Adding the planter at the top gives the user the option to plant something as simple as a flower, or they could try their hand at growing vegetables/herbs. Mental health issues are among the top concerns when dealing with the homeless population, and one way to address mental health issues is by bettering the environment you are in. This can even be done via something as simple as one plant, which can help people feel happier or more productive.

Some of the simple storage options include the front exterior storage pouch, and the shelving on the inside of the cart. There is also a small safe at the far back of the cart for any valuables the user wants to store. The interior storage allows the user to keep small personal treasures safe or to store nonperishable food options along with the tent.

I created the cart in 3 variations; one is a pull along cart with a handle similar to that of a suitcase, the second design has a bike wheel attachment instead of handles, and the 3rd variation is completely stationary and has no wheels. The mobile options were important to me because of how often the homeless population is displaced, however, I thought it was important to also include a non-mobile option. That way, those who may already have a cart or wagon but want to enjoy the benefits of the Camping Cart can, but without the burden of wheeling around a second object.
